Learn To Forgive

Mark 11:22-24 says, “Have faith in God, “Jesus answered.  “I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, Go, throw yourself into the sea, and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him.  Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will by yours.”

A lot of  people read these verses and get excited because they believe that whatever they ask for in prayer, will be given to them; if they believe that they received it by faith.  Jesus does say that you can have whatever you ask for in prayer, but it is not quite that easy.  You see, most people stop reading at the end of verse 24, but if you notice that verse 25 starts with the word “AND”.  The word “AND” indicates that verse 25 goes with verse 24 and that they both are meant to go together.  Then Jesus goes on and makes two more statements.  The 1st one is in Mark 11:25.  It says, “AND” when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”  Verse 25 is telling us about something that can hinder our faith and prayers.  We are told to forgive others, so that our Father in heaven may forgive us.  This is very important, because it is a sin to hold a grudge against someone.  You have to let it go and forget about it, no matter what someone may have done to you.  Someone might say it sounds easy to do, but you do not know what they did to me.  Well it does not matter what they did.  You are to forgive them regardless.  Jesus was perfect without sin and still He was unjustly betrayed, He was accused, rejected, tortured and crucified on the cross.  And still when they nailed Jesus to the cross, He said in Luke 23:34, “Father forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”  In Colossians 3:13 it tells us to forgive whatever grievances we may have against one another, and to forgive as the Lord has forgiven us.  We should forgive in obedience to God’s Word, because if we do not, then we can not expect our faith to work.  God can not meet your needs according to His Word, if you are not living in line with His Word.

The second statement Jesus makes about something hindering your prayers is in Matthew 6:15, “But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”  If you notice, God is not talking to sinners, He is talking to believers.  Unforgiveness is one reason why many people do not ever fulfill the plan that God has for their life.  It is also one reason why many people do not receive answers to their prayers.  They might be able to quote the scriptures and make all the right confessions, but if they have any unforgiveness in their life, faith will not work for them.  When you start holding grudges, unforgiveness starts building up in your spirit, and if you are not careful, it will clog up the flow of your spirit and soon after that you will have nothing flowing in your life at all.  So if your spirit is clogged up with unforgiveness, you need to get on your knees before God and get it all out so your spirit can start flowing again.  When it says in God’s Word that we are to forgive, it does not necessary mean that you have to go to the person that you have unforgiveness towards, unless your spirit leads you do so.  If you spirit leads you to do so, then you need to go to that person and tell them that you forgive them for whatever it is they did.  However, it could mean something as simple as that when you are praying, God brings a remembrance to you that you have not forgiven someone of something.  Then you can simply say “God I forgive that person in my heart and I ask you now to forgive me for holding a grudge against them.”  Then it is a done deal.  If you do not get rid of all unforgiveness and you start holding grudges in one area and give Satan one inch of ground, he will start taking over other areas of your life and eventually he will back you into a corner.  Holding onto unforgiveness will affect the words that you speak because holding a grudge in your heart will eventually make you talk about it.  It says in Matthew 12:34, “that out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks.”  Words are like containers.  They are either filled with hate, doubt, unforgiveness or they are filled with love, faith and forgiveness.  You control what is around you by the words you speak. So when you stand praying, forgive those who have done you wrong or people who are important to you.  Forgiving is not always an easy thing to do and if you have a hard time forgiving someone, you can always ask the Holy Spirit to help you forgive those who have sinned against you.

Jesus said in John 14:16-17 that He will ask the Father and He will give you another counselor, or helper, to be with you forever and that He will live with you and be in you.  The Holy Spirit is a Counselor, or helper and He is with you at all times.  So if you need His help, He will be there for you to call on.  If you still choose to hold a grudge, you will never experience the fullness that God has prepared for your life.  So choose to walk in forgiveness and refuse to hold anything against anyone.  If someone does you wrong, then forgive them and pray for them.  Paul said in Galatians that faith works by love, so you need to walk in love toward the ones who have done you wrong.  Love will overlook them, it will let it go and love forgives.  It is impossible for your faith to work without forgiveness and we need our faith to work in order to fulfill the plan for our life and to receive all the riches and glories that God has made for us.  So to have strong faith, you must also be strong in love and forgiveness. So no matter if someone offends or hurts you, you can not hold a grudge and expect God to use you.  Let God deal with them for the wrong that they did towards you.  Just remember you have a plan and a future in your life to fulfill.  So do not let yourself be cut off from the flow of God’s grace and presence, by holding a grudge against someone and not having total forgiveness in your heart.
